Hello Broncos!
Welcome to the Boise State University 2026 Program in Greece!
We’re excited to embark on this adventure with you and can’t wait to explore Greece together.
Below, you’ll find some useful information to help you prepare for your trip.
MONEY DURING YOUR TRIP
CONTACT YOUR BANK
You can mostly do this online, but it’s a good idea to call your bank or credit card company to confirm your travel notification. Make sure to notify every bank and credit card provider you plan to use during your trip to avoid any unexpected blocks on your transactions.
Always have backups in case you lose a card or one doesn’t work. I personally recommend carrying at least three bank cards and three credit cards, so you’re always covered. Better safe than stranded!
CHECK BANK FEES
Some cards impose foreign transaction fees, so double-check that you won’t be charged extra every time you swipe. Also, just like in the U.S., expect ATM fees—both from your bank and the ATM provider abroad. If you have a card that waives ATM fees, confirm that the benefit applies worldwide, not just in certain regions.
PRO-TIPS
Opt to pay in the local currency when using your credit card. Your card will offer a better exchange rate compared to the vendor's, saving you money in the long run.
DON'T BRING US CURRENCY ON YOUR TRIP
Exchanging money can be a hassle, and the exchange rates are often not in your favor. Skip the cash exchange and keep your money in your bank account—you’ll get a much better rate using your card for payments and withdrawals!
US banks often charge hefty fees for currency exchange, making withdrawals and transactions abroad more expensive than they need to be.
The most cost-effective way to avoid high exchange rates and ATM fees is to set up a Revolut account and get a free debit card. The process is super simple—just go to the App Store or Google Play Store, search for Revolut, and download the app. In just a few minutes, you’ll have a secure, fee-free way to manage your money while traveling!
USE AN ATM UPON ARRIVAL TO GET CASH!
Yes, you can withdraw cash from an ATM at the airport, but unless you need it immediately, it’s best to wait until you arrive at your first location and then use an ATM at a bank. Just like in the US, you’ll find ATMs in stores and random spots, but using one from a reputable bank is the safest and most cost-effective option. And remember—be smart with your cash. Don’t walk around with €500 in your pocket. You don’t want to risk it getting stolen or accidentally misplacing it in all the excitement of exploring a new place!

what if there is a delay in my flight?
Travel days don’t always go exactly as planned and that’s completely okay.
If you arrive later than our scheduled meeting time, simply make your way directly to Nubian Athens Hostel and check in on your own.
The moment you land, send a WhatsApp message to Kostas, our Operations Director, at +30 694 560 4376. He’ll personally guide you and make sure your arrival in Athens is smooth and stress-free.
🚕 The simplest option is a taxi. Official yellow taxis are available 24/7 just outside the Arrivals level. Simply follow the “Taxi” signs as you exit baggage claim. There is a fixed airport rate to central Athens: approximately €40 during the day and €55 late at night. Within about 40 minutes, you’ll be in the heart of Athens.
🚇 If you prefer public transport, follow the clear “Metro / Trains” signs from Arrivals and walk across the pedestrian bridge to the Airport Railway Station. From there, take Metro Line 3 (Blue Line) toward Dimotiko Theatro and get off at Panepistimio Station. From Panepistimio, it’s a pleasant 10-minute walk to the hostel. The total metro ride takes about 40 minutes.
🚌 Another convenient option is the 24/7 X95 airport bus to Syntagma Square. The bus departs from the designated Bus Terminal located just outside the Arrivals level. Simply follow the “Bus” signs when exiting the airport. From Syntagma, you’re just a 15-minute walk or a short taxi ride away from the hostel.
Athens is safe, accessible, and easy to navigate. Even if your journey shifts slightly, we’ll make sure your Greek experience begins smoothly.

HAZARDS & SAFETY
SUN
Greek Sun is strong. It can dehydrate you, burn your skin and even exhaust you.
Especially when at sea or during activities like hiking or snorkeling, long exposure without proper hydration, hat and sun screen might lead to heat strokes.
night out
Summer is the best time for party. In Greece alcohol is consumed a lot both from locals and tourists. However there are some few things that you need to be aware. Cheap alcohol usually means bad quality. It can seriously ruin your night, definitely your next morning and even send you to the hospital!
Drinking & driving is seen very often in Greece. Pay extra attention when crossing junctions or walking on the side of the road, especially in the islands!
Sea dangers
The Greek archipelago is one of the cleanest and safest in the world. No dangerous marine life exists in the Hellenic Ocean. The only think to be cautious about is sea urchins on shallow rocky waters - they do not move so they are easy to avoid.
PICKPOCKETING
Pickpocketing and bag snatching does exist, but it's not as common as you would expect. Picpockets usually lurk around popular tourist destinations and big cities like Athens, but applying simple precaution measures should minimize this risk.
WOMEN TRAVEL
It is very safe for women to travel to Greece. Just following common sense and applying basic precaution measures (not walking around in the dark, in empty streets, not finding yourself alone with strange men) should ensure that your travel goes without any incidents.
